Letterpress Printing

Seit einigen Wochen nun, lässt mich der Gedanke des "Letterpress Printing" nicht mehr los. Ich möchte auch so schön geprägte und gedruckte Einladungen oder Visitenkarten drucken, wie zum Beispiel, die von Elegante Press aus Litauen (website):

For some weeks now, I've been obsessed with the thought of letterpress printing. I would also like to print such beautiful business cards or invitations as for example Elegante Press from Lithuania does:

Nach kurzer Zeit fand ich heraus, dass die Umsetzung meines Wunsches wohl sehr teuer kommen würde. Um Letterpress zu drucken benötigt man eine Druckmaschine (die kleinste Druckmaschine bekommt man ab ca. € 300). Am Bild eine etwas größere (wahrscheinlich sowieso zu groß für mein Arbeitszimmer :-) und eine kleine Kelsey Press:

Only some time after searching for letterpress printing on the internet I found out that the realisation of my wish would be rather expensive. I'd need a printing press (the smallest would be $ 300 and up). In the picture you can see a big printing machine (wouldn't fit into my small office space anyways :-) and a smaller Kelsey printing press:


Desweiteren benötigt man natürlich die Schrift - man findet auf ebay und etsy noch einige vollständige Schriftsätze - bekommt man ab ca. € 50 - da ist dann natürlich jeder Buchstaben nur einmal vorhanden. Für eine Visitenkarte oder Einladung benötigt man aber leider mehr A's und E's und T's :-)

Furthermore I'd need Letters - you can find sets of type on ebay or etsy for $ 50 and up. Of course there's only one of each letter per set and for a business card or invitation you'll need more than one A or E or T :-)

Wollte ich das Letterpress-Verfahren also einmal ausprobieren, müsste ich um die € 1000,- investieren - Grund genug, um nach günstigeren Wegen zu suchen. Deshalb recherchierte ich im Internet nach verschiedenen DIY-Ideen für das Letterpress Printing. Als Druckmaschine eignet sich theoretisch jedes Werkzeug bzw. Maschine mit welcher man pressen kann. Nach einigen Überlegungen und der Einholung von Ratschlägen stellte sich heraus, dass ein Bohrständer funktionieren könnte.

So if I'd really wanted to try letterpress printing I would have to invest approx. € 1000 - reason enough to find a cheaper way :-) I searched the internet for DIY ideas. As an alternative to a printing machine every machine or tool should work that is able to press. After some researchg and getting advice I found that a drill rig could work.

Wie würde ich aber die Schriftsätze bekommen?
Ich versuchte das Negativ eines Buchstaben aus Holz zu fräsen, dieses dann mit Lötzinn zu füllen - leider perlte der Lötzinn zu viel und füllte den Buchstaben nicht sauber aus. Ich versuchte den Buchstaben also mit einer Heißklebepistole zu füllen - es entstanden eigentlich sehr saubere "Stempel", aber wollte man kleinere Buchstaben machen, wäre diese Art unmöglich.
Ich versuchte dann das Positiv des Buchstaben aus Holz zu fräsen und dies gelang sehr gut. Ich machte ein a und s (sie sollten für den Druck eigentlich spiegelverkehrt sein aber für's Probieren war das eigentlich egal). Hier seht ihr ein Foto von dem a und dem s und der Prägung, die die Buchstaben machten. Mit Tinte funktionierte es auch einwandfrei.

But how would I get the type?
I tried to mill a negative of a letter from wood, then fill it with solder - didn't work out well because the solder forms bubbles and doesn't fill the form properly. I then tried to fill it with hot melt gun. I let it cool down and took out a rather nice looking "stamp" of the letter. But it wouldn't work with small letters.
So i tried to mill the positive of the letter and that worked out really well! I milled an "a" and "s" (to then be actually printed they would have had to be mirror inverted but it didn't matter for the trying part). On the picture you can see the a and s and the embossing it made on the paper. It worked well with ink too.

Für einzelne Muster bzw. Elemente eines Druckes eignet sich das Fräsen aus Holz sehr gut, aber für einen gesamten Schriftsatz ist es doch etwas zu aufwendig.

For some patterns and elements of a print the milling out of wood would work but for a whole set of type it would be too time-consuming.
Ich gab nicht auf und suchte weiter nach Alternativen und fand die Firma Boxcar Press in New York. Ich war bei meinen Recherchen schon einige Male über deren Webseite gestoßen. Die Firma stellt Photopolymer Platten speziell für den Letterpress Druck her. So sehen diese Platten dann aus.

I didn't give up and searched for further alternatives and found the company Boxcar Press in New York. While searching the internet I came across their website a few times. They make custom photopolymer plates for letterpress printing. That's how those plates look like.

Man sendet einfach eine Datei mit dem Layout und bekommt eine Druckplatte. Ein großer Vorteil dieser Druckplatten ist, dass man sie auseinanderschneiden kann. Die Druckplatten sind auch relativ günstig mit ca. $ 0,67 pro square inch. Ich machte also eine Datei mit Klein- und Großbuchstaben, mit meinem Logo, ein paar Sonderzeichen, Strichen und Kreisen. Heute wird die Druckplatte weggeschickt, also sollte sie nächste Woche bei mir ankommen. Durch das Auseinanderschneiden der Platte bekomme ich also viele einzelne Buchstaben, um Worte zu bilden :-)
Papier habe ich auch schon bestellt (50 Stk. Postkarten über etsy) - ein möglichst dickes, um schöne Prägungen zu erhalten.

You'll just send them a file with the layout and get a printing plate. A big advantage of those printing plates is the ability to cut them. Also they are very inexpensive with only $ 0,67 per square inch. So I created a file with small and capital letters, my logo, lines and circles and sent it to them. Today they are supposed to ship my printing plate and hopefully it'll be here by next week! Through cutting the letters apart I will be able to form different words and sentences :-)
I also ordered paper (I bought 50 postcards on etsy) - a very thick one so the embossing will turn out nice

Nun fehlt mir noch die Tinte und der Roller und ich kann losdrucken. Bin gespannt und kanns kaum erwarten!
